I live in Chiang Mai with my with my wife. She's Thai and I'm American.
Getting outside of the city and enjoying nature is my top recommendation.
If you're good on a motorcycle, then that is how I'd recommend getting around outside of the city (within the city you're looking to get fined 500 baht every three days if you don't have an international driver's license).
Places I'd recommend:
- Chiang Dao. Beautiful mountain, temple in a cave, mostly local community, good for a day or two.
-Mon Jam. Good for camping.
-Pai. It's a great drive there on a motorcycle. Lots of waterfalls along the way and in Pai. Pai is a backpacker destination.
-In Chiang Mai I'd walk around free Old City. My wife and I have a tattoo shop there, Panumart Tattoo. You're welcome to stop by and say hi and ask questions.
