"If you're asking yourself how robots can "make good" on damages, don't worry, they won't own money — but they could be compulsorily insured, using funds they accumulate for their owners, Politico recently suggested." from the article. I also think it's worth pointing out that there's both a criminal and civil aspect to liability; as in the robot may be found criminally responsible for committing the act but the manufacturer could still be sued in civil court where the standards aren't quite as stringent. OJ Simpson is sort of an example, where he was not found criminally guilty but was found civilly liable. Products liability also comes to mind, where joint and several liability is a key concept; that multiple parties share responsibility for an injury. FWIW I can't see any good reason to ever restrict rights, and stuff like this could will be used against us in the trials/war of the robot uprisings. I support basic rights. I think the (not far-flung) future is harmony between humans and non-humans but it might be uncomfortable getting there. Tl;dr - legal systems are flexible and adaptable.
