> Honestly, I feel like the US is long overdue for an overhaul improving workers' rights. Problem is, back in the eighties the voting population overwhelmingly stated that they wanted the opposite by electing Reagan in a couple of landslides, then Bush in yet another one. These people gave Reagan a standing ovation when he broke up the air traffic controller's strike, the beginning of the end for employee rights. To survive in this political environment, Democrats had to shift to the center. It took many years of voter apathy for this to happen, it's gonna take many years of ballot support for Democrats to shift significantly again toward the left. But since so many idiots have the short-sighted stubborn stance of "change immediately or I'm not voting", Democrats still have to look for votes within the moderate sector of the population, and nothing shifts while republicans get ever more anti-science batshit insane. It's madness on one side and lazy apathy turning into lazy outrage on the other. Whatever the case, these are all still repercussions from the goddamned Reagan decade, locked into place since the advent of the murdoch and limbaugh propaganda machines. If people really want things to change towards ever more progressive tendencies again, they have to vote in every single election - special, off-year, midterm and presidential, local state and federal. Over and over again for the progressive candidates while sometimes pinching their nose to vote for a blue dog/moderate to get or keep the batshit insane republicans out from office.
