I think this article missed something from Dawkins I think, but has the right idea.. Dawkins said the gene was the central unit driving evolution. That's true for the individual organism. But he went to great lengths to describe the various evolutionary units that previous biologists had considered. The organism, the grouping or organisms, the evolutionarily stable system between organisms and within an ecosystem - then the gene and finally the meme. What I took from this is not that the gene is the driver of evolution, but one example of evolution. That evolution needs two things which happen to be inevitabilities. It needs a unit of evolution which is simply an imperfect replicator - a single unit that can make copies of itself with imperfections, and that unit needs a medium in which to operate. The gene functions within its intracellular environment and its changes travel up the chain to the organism, the organism to the tribe, the tribe to the ecosystem. The gene was not the original unit of replication, but the product of some previous imperfect replicator operating in some primordial soup. Probably RNA, probably some even less complex molecule before that. The neural network that evolved to enable hindsight and foresight is simply the next medium on which an imperfect replicator can operate. Dawkins called in the meme. You pass ideas back and forth, they change, some die, some last forever but never in their original form. And its a medium that actually transcends the biological constraints that were imposed on previous replicator-medium pairings. You can't replicate a cell without a chemical reaction. You can replicate an idea through language - itself an idea that evolved. Chemical reactions happen in the language processing and memory of the receiving biological system, of course.
