I've always seen this as a conflict between ideas thinkers are unwilling to reconcile, not an actual problem with the human condition. The universe is deterministic. "Evidence" to the contrary either exists on a scale of dubious relevance to our experiences or as a function of heavy interpretations that spin this "evidence" into fanciful stories with little resemblance to original data. Wishful thinking is the primary driver of interpretations that create space for freewill as a real phenomenon far outside the realm of scientific explanation (i.e. supernatural.) No magic is required to understand our reality. The human experience is the play of our programs by our inputs. Our choices aren't separate from determinism -- they are seamlessly incorporated into the weave. Our experiences, our reactions, our musings, and even our most agonizing decisions are all part of a timestream that, from an omniscient external perspective, is a perfectly linear series of inevitabilities. Contrary positions share striking parallels with theism. Yes, we cannot prove the absence of any departure from this deterministic flow. No, we need not concede a thing does exist for inability to establish with absolute certainty that it does not. Yet there is nothing about determinism that mitigates personal responsibility. We still exist. As much as anything, we are the mechanism of stimulus and response that shapes our behaviors.
