I'm not a philosopher by any means, I don't really know the formal definitions of free will, but the way I see it is that there is a spectrum or continuum of some sorts that pertains to all aspects of human society. Free will is no different. I believe the question of free will has no yes or no answer, rather free-will is something that can be exersized but is not a given. You could visualise it as a mind versus body problem: You have free will, but your physical reality puts a limit on your ability to exersize it. Anybody with a mind can do things on their own accord, but it takes work to actually follow trough. A dumbed down example: You might say: I will fly now. But you won't because you can't. But you can build and airplane (or buy a plane ticket) and then you've put effort into that thing which you willed and made it so. Same goes for quitting smoking, same goes for not committing a crime. You have the power to not do these things, but you have to work towards it. That said, a persons preposition to act on their will and not on their whims is defined seperately for each individual. Not killing people or not smoking are societal constructs, but not everyone is equally addiction resistant or peaceful and kind in their nature - so for them to adhere to societal constructs on their own free will requires more effort, since their genetic make-up and experiences tell them otherwise. In that sense - being weak willed is not a choice, it's predetermined, but with the right guidance one can work towards being stronger willed cq not solely acting on bodily cravings and old patterns of behavior. In short: Free-will is a constant fight for self-actualisation against the bounderies put up by your metaphysical nature (your body, your environment, and also your mind - your neurochemical make-up). *imo*
