I somewhat agree but I think when you say the problem is the profit motive you simplify things too much. All those environmental regulations you mentioned will make products more costly from a consumption point of view regardless of whether a profit is being pursued. The Soviet Union did not revolve around profits but was equally if not more so environmentally destructive. For me, I feel the problem is moreso growth rather than profit; the idea and practice that there are no limits to growth and that technology will solve all of our problems. As a species we are enamored with our own affluence and are unwilling to give it up, even if it means we are destroying the Earth in the long-term.
