For me, it's the opposite. A liberal in Europe is also a right leaning person because it is liberal in the economical sense, and usually comes with conservative in the social sense, but the latter is not required (albeit very common for both groups to overlap). Thus when left leaning people call themselves liberals in America, it always confuses me. But yet again, whenever I see a political map of the US, I get a bit uneasy, because the red "should" be blue and the blue "should" be red. Not that it is wrong, but my brain won't accept it. Different places have different labels.
