Also concentration camps. People didn't even revolt when horrible death was certain - and they significantly outnumbered the guards. Sure, a lot of them would have died - but they all died anyway, at least in the "death camps". But what this shows is humans *do not* generally sacrifice their life for others, those are exceptions. Same with the revolution: There's a pretty high chance for *other people* to benefit when *you* start revolting, while you will loose freedom and possibly life. "Yes, we want revolution!!! *(But you go first....)*" We don't think as a group, we think as individuals. It takes a lot of brain washing and/or cultural pressure for personal sacrifice to become more common. I read somewhere that "honor culture" like that of the military is mostly a feature of violent groups, military, gangs, mafia, etc.
