Voting with your dollars will never work. People scoff at Marx, but he described what's happening in these factories perfectly in *Capital*. These businesses remain profitable by forcing workers to toil for longer hours for less and less pay. They're trying to suck as much surplus product out of them as humanly possible with as little operating cost as possible. It doesn't matter if you shop at GAP rather than Wallmart. Because they're all operating off that same principle. They don't have a choice. Businesses can't remain competitive unless they exhibit these kinds of practices on one level or another. In the textile industry this is especially true, because while the actual materials used in production may be comparatively cheap, so is the product itself in most cases. Only way to get around that is to attack the overall cost of labor while increasing its productivity. And it just so happens that the clothing industry requires a hell of a lot of labor. So how do you make money when you need to pay all these people? Pay them next to nothing, make them work as long as possible producing shit for you, and erode their conditions in general. Barring outright slavery, you need to get as close to it as possible.
