i have a hard time as well on some roads, especially if it's wet and at night, then the already faint line is nearly invisible and you just have to go by where the other cars are to figure out where you should be.
at least with a fully automated and networked system, every car would communicate with each other and work make room easier to allow for merging, turning, stopping, or whatever.
