There's a reason that Google always tests their cars in the same neighborhood, which they have completely mapped to the last detail.
This technology is being oversold at present. The advanced adaptive cruise control in Teslas, et al, is not autonomous driving; it's following the freeway lane markers when they are there.
And, yes, this doesn't work very well when you can't see the lane markers, as when the road is covered in snow.
