You need to calculate whether increased cost of usage will cost more or less than manufacturing more of them. In essence, will it take more energy to move one car around a lot or build three cars and move them around a quarter as much? That's how large-scale economic calculations work. As for splitting the cost of ownership, you can do that right now. You could time-share a car (or small pool of cars) with some people if you really wanted to. With a scheduling system and automated availability alerts.
Cars buzzing between houses will take up a *lot* of miles unless you're directly adjacent in which case you're going to hit a lot of problems with peak demand exceeding available supply. Unless you have sufficient local supply to meet demand at all times. At which point you should question why you're leasing a car from a middleman when you can own it directly in a joint agreement with family members and/or trustworthy neighbors.
