Unfortunately that's overlooking the reality of the situation. Most people commute during the same hours of the day: rush hour. A lot of the traffic on the road during off-peak traffic can be replaced with self-driving uber/taxi, but you've still got the rush hour peak to deal with. I think it's likely that most people will still own their own personal car for this reason. However, regardless who owns the cars you've still got the problem of a lot of traffic going in one direction at one time of day, and then going the other direction at another. You're still going to need a lot of cars, and a lot of places to park those cars, because that's just the nature of the demand for transportation. The difference is you can have your self-driving car go further in search of a parking space. But then while you're at your destination your car is still on the road, causing congestion. Depending on the cost of gasoline/electricity and the cost of parking, if you've got a short trip to make maybe it's cheaper to just have your car circle the block instead of parking? But again, that's just adding to the congestion. What happens if everybody does that? I wouldn't be surprised if, within a decade of self-driving cars becoming commercially available, we start seeing municipal regulations on the use of road by empty cars, to prevent roads from being used as rolling parking lots. I give even odds on a major municipal center banning unlicensed cars from driving unoccupied within twenty years. Only ubers/taxis will be allowed to drive without passengers. And we'll be back where we were five years ago in regards to taxis.
