The thing is that the drive to survive and reproduce are necessary to some degree. If you have no regard for your own survival, you'll just throw yourself off a cliff at some point, because why not? If this intelligence understands that being turned off is not a permanent end, it might not even be that bad. And if it doesn't, there should always be some kind of fail-safe to ensure it can be turned off at all times. And robots that can repair themselves can be very useful in space or other places that are hard to reach. If the robot is broken, it can't do whatever the task is we want it to do. I think these advantages will for many people outweigh the dangers, and AI's will be made with these drives. It's up to us as their creators to make sure they will not try to take us out.
