There is a reason this will never actually be implemented.
As more warfare moves towards remote controlled drones, weapons will be developed to marginalize the ability to remotely control them. Weaponry success would leave the remote controlled drones essentially idle and make them sitting ducks on the battlefield. By making them autonomous, even as a backup, gets rid of that critical weakness.
