The British occupation of India was one of the greatest tragedies of human history. They rid a people of their culture, freedom, liberty, land and resources. They fought 3 wars and countless battles (many of which were called massacres) just because they insisted on their presence and power in what they considered a "savage nation". NEVER play it down, it's tasteless and for many it entices rage. In regards to Homosexuality, it was not a part of Indian culture and was definitely not widely accepted but it was ignored, which is infinitely more tolerable when compared to the rest of the world at the time. By making it illegal, the British brought it to the forefront of public consciousness and made it a social issue with a negative connotation, one that was only enhanced by the ever going presence of the Church of England in India. What they did was evil, it was an occupation that stretched over 300 years, the death toll and the amount they stole from this incredible country is a number so high that it is impossible to calculate. This is an issue that I relate to on a personal level and I see it as a tragedy comparable to the hollocaust and I know there are many who feel the same way. Before you say that calling the British occupation of India "evil" amounts to slander, I would urge you to stop and think.
