Democracy is not liberalism. Democracy is not humanism. Democracy is human beings deciding for themselves how they wish to live and be governed, according to their own customs, their own way of life, and their own values. Sometimes democracy does things that seem distasteful to our ears. That's OK. That's part of democracy. Nigeria is not an ideal democracy, certainly, and has had many issues, but I will not condemn a people for having different values than my own. I will accept their decision, rather than pretend in an absolute and universal moral code [which, coincidentally, is largely identical to modern Western humanist values], and while I would not allow it in my country, I will not condemn it in theirs. This is, indeed, a very good example of why the brooha surrounding the Arab Spring may simmer down - as they start electing human beings whose moral and ethical code is completely alien to our own. The Libyan President has a prayer bump, the Palestinians elected terrorists, and the Nigerians criminalize homosexual marriage. This IS what we wanted, isn't it? Democracy?
